The Film Department of the Higher School of Theatre and Cinema will celebrate this academic year fifty years of teaching the cinema. The celebrations of this fiftieth anniversary have beginning on the next October 7, with a very special opening session of the school year.

It is five decades, from the creation of the first top film course in Portugal: five decades of development of a pedagogical teaching project of cinema in a public school; five decades of institutional affirmation of artistic education in a film school, whose prestige, visibly expressed, over these fifty years, in national and international recognition of the quality of its trainees and in its integration into the professional fabric of cinema in Portugal, guarantees you the national school character.

Created in the academic year 1972/73, at the National Conservatory, under the designation of Pilot School for the Training of Cinema Professionals, is as the School of Cinema that will henceforward be known and refereed. As a result of the conversion of the National Conservatory, the Film Department of the Higher School of Theatre and Cinema, integrated since 1985 at the Polytechnic Institute of Lisbon, is the natural heir to that legacy and the continuer of that teaching in its current Graduate, Master and Doctorate courses, guarding as an identitarian brand the one that has been, since its foundation, a pioneering articulation between the artistic and professionalizing strand of its teaching.

The opening day of the commemorations will start, by 10h30 in the morning, with the reception to the school community and special guests, followed by a session with interventions from the current management bodies as well as from the former director of the film department, and there is at the end a Port of honour. From the afternoon, a set of six award-winning films will be displayed, held in school context.
